1.3.6. Modifying Existing Figure Types

If a figure type has been created and used in the animation but needs to be modified in some way then this is possible by clicking the edit button, making the changes in the figure builder window and then clicking Modify Figure Type from the File menu. The pose of the figures in each frame will be kept where possible. This is particularly useful for adding new details to figure types after an animation has been created.

Begin editing a figure type by selecting the figure and clicking the edit button in the main animation window.

Make changes to the figure type such as changing colours, changing the draw order of segments or adding or deleting segments or polygons. Try to make the minimum changes possible and avoid deleting and re-adding segments.

Click 'Modify Figure Type' in the File menu to apply the changes to all figures of that type in all frames. This operation cannot be undone, so a warning will be shown if the animation is unsaved. Make sure that you are happy with the modification changes before saving again.

Note that changes to the pose of dynamic segments will not take effect on the resulting figures in the animation to avoid overwriting their pose. However, changes to the angle of static segments will take effect.

If the default figure type is being edited then a new figure type will be created and all default figures in all frames will be changed to the new figure type (you will be asked to name the new figure type).

Example of modifying a stickman figure type by adding a new line segment (a baton)
The timeline before (top) and after (bottom) shows that the changes have been applied to all frames
Note that the new baton segment automatically changes angle to follow the forearm segment

Using the nominate origin button while editing a figure will result in frame figure poses being lost when Modify Figure Type is used. All figures of that type will have their pose reset to that of the figure type. It is therefore not recommended to use the nominate origin button while modifying a figure unless you don't mind the pose being reset. This is also the case if all segments are deleted and replaced.

Text objects can also be modified in a similar way. The 'Modify Existing Text Object' option can be found by clicking the menu button at the top right hand corner of the text editor window.
